Chapter Seven

It was hot as hell under the brutal south Florida sun as Ronny stood on the roof of the four-car garage and pulled off broken pieces of tile. Even with her huge fishing hat, complete with mesh mask and long fabric tail to protect her neck, the sun was stinging any sliver of exposed skin.

“You know we could hire someone to do the crappy parts,” Bill called, wiping the sweat from his face and newly growing beard.

“But then we couldn’t take pride in saying we did all the work ourselves,” Ronny replied.

Bill nodded before pouring a bottle of water on his head and putting his matching fishing hat back on. “Hey, where did you go last night? Tyler said you were fishing, but I didn’t see you on the dock.”

Ronny grinned but didn’t respond.

“Oh come on. Since when do we keep secrets?” He knocked his shovel into hers until she stopped and looked at him.

“Don’t go making a whole thing about it,” she warned, unable to contain her growing smile.

“Were you with the mean, hot, vet lady?” he screeched.

“She’s not mean. She’s just high strung,” Ronny defended her automatically.

Bill hooted. “Holy shit! You really were with her! What happened? What did you use to melt the ice? A blow torch?”

“Don’t be a pig,” she chided, whacking his hand with the shovel handle.

“Listen. That lady is certifiable. Her assistant, on the other hand, is gorgeous without being a nightmare.” Bill whistled, a faraway look in his eyes.

Ronny knocked him on the knuckles again. “How many times have I told you you’ve got to stop fetishizing redheads?”

“Ow, damn, sorry!” he apologized, shaking out his hand even though she hadn’t hit him hard. He’d always been dramatic. “So, what were you doing over there?”

Before Ronny could answer, dogs started barking in the distance, and then her pack echoed the alarm.

“What the hell?” Ronny muttered as she spotted a moving shadow near Vanessa’s gate. It made the hair on the back of her neck stand on end. “Call the police!” she yelled as a disembodied arm appeared over the gate with something clutched in its fingers. From a distance, Ronny couldn’t tell what it was, but the way the dogs were jumping to get it, she was sure it wasn’t good.

“What? Why?” Bill called, but she was already taking a running jump from the garage roof to the wall that separated her house from Vanessa’s.

Her heart was pounding, and the adrenaline pumping through her system made her want to puke. She channeled it all into willing her body to move faster. Running along the wall to the gate, she dove at the dark figure crouched in the shadow.

“Get off of me!” the man screamed, but there was no way in hell that was going to happen.

A childhood of wrestling with her brothers came back all at once. Ronny hooked her long legs around the guy’s thighs and tucked her arms under his armpits before clasping her fingers together at the back of his neck.
